Chapter 24

Rykki dressed in her traditional black shirt, black vest and black pants. She left her hair loose since the heat of the day was not nearly as severe. The chill of autumn neared. It made standing outside waiting for Evangeline much more bearable. It had been nearly twelve hours since her spell, and she was confident that Evangeline was not far off.

Leaning against the cottage, Rykki fought a yawn. She was tired, but her magic felt decently strong. She could pretend for the duration of the meeting that she was not exhausted. She could let Evangeline see no weakness.

Mind purposefully clear, Rykki waited. The sun began its descent in the sky by the time footsteps crunched through the forest. Rykki appreciated that Evangeline did not bother trying to hide. She knew that Rykki had summoned her. Good.

On the other side of the road, Evangeline’s silhouette came out of the trees. She crossed the road then stood facing Rykki, arms folded with a look of annoyance on her face.

“I see time with the humans hasn’t totally dulled your magic,” Evangeline said by way of greeting.

Rykki didn’t take the bait as she studied her old friend. Her runes were unlit, her clothes dirty and torn. A small scratch ran down the side of her right cheek, bleeding slightly.

“You look like you just battled Osai herself.”

Evangeline’s jaw clenched. “What do you want?”

“Admit it, you’re impressed that I know such a spell.” Rykki grinned, her face schooled into a smugness she didn’t feel. Looking at Evangeline brought back so many memories, but it also brought out a side of her that she’d long since abandoned. Somehow, that person she’d been still resurfaced when faced with another witch.

“I don’t give a damn what you know. What do you want? You summoned me, so I hope it is not a waste of time.” Evangeline paused. “In fact, how did you summon me? What did you use?”

Rykki reached into her pocket, pulling out the necklace. She held up her hand, let the pendant dangle from her fingers. “I got your present.”

Evangeline’s face blanched. Her eyes tracked the necklace as it slowly swung. “Where did you get that?”

Her reaction was unexpected, and it knocked Rykki’s confidence down a solid notch. “What do you mean? It was delivered to me like you asked. Don’t waste my time.” Yet, Evangeline looked as spooked as Rykki had felt the first time she’d seen it.

“I don’t know what game you’re playing, but I haven’t seen that thing since before you were banished.” Evangeline shook her head, shadows flashed through her eyes. Rykki wondered what memory plagued her, though she had a solid idea. “Someone gave it to you?” Evangeline asked in a soft voice.

“Yes. A couple days ago. I thought it was you.” Rykki’s hand trembled, so she put the necklace back in her pocket and kept her hand in as well. A chill skittered up her spine.

“No, I swear. I don’t know where it came from.”

Rykki bit the inside of her cheek, confused.
